El Proceso de Asilo en España: De la Hoja Blanca a la Tarjeta Roja 2026

The asylum application process (international protection) in Spain may seem confusing at first. It is essential to understand the stages and the documents you will receive during this process.

Here we explain the main phases of your application:

First Appointment (Declaration of Intent): When you begin your application process, you will receive the familiar "White Sheet". This provisional document contains your NIE number and proves that you are legally in the country while your case is being reviewed.

The Red Card (Renewal): When your White Card is about to expire (usually after 9 months), you must apply for the Red Card. This document formally identifies you as an asylum seeker.

Right to Work: 6 months after you obtain your first asylum documentation, the Red Card is automatically activated with the work permit ("Authorizes to work").

The Final Decision (TIE): If the government grants and approves your Asylum, the final step will be to go to the police station to have your fingerprints taken and obtain your final physical residence card (TIE).
